Tungsten Inert Gas Welding Basics

Date Added: September 21, 2007 12:03:35 PMPrevious    Next

When learning how to perform TIG welding there are four basic steps you must remember.  Safety, torch placement, foot control pedal, and filler metal must all be fully understood before proceeding.

  • Make sure you have all the necessary safety equipment and appropriate clothing.
  • Approved welding helmet fitted with a proper shade of filter lenses to protect your face and eyes when welding or watching
  • Approved safety glasses with side shields under your helmet
  • Protective clothing made from durable, flame-resistant material (leather, heavy cotton, or wool) and foot protection.
  • Hold the TIG torch in your hand at a 70° or 80° angle. Raise the torch so that the tungsten is off of the work piece no more than 1/8 to 1/4 in.
  • Pick up your filler metal in your other hand so it rests horizontally at a 15° angle from the work piece - not pointed down.
  • Cleaning both the weld joint area and the filler metal is an important preparation.
  • When welding a T-joint, the edge and the flat surface are to be joined together, and the edge will melt faster.
  • Use the smallest diameter tungsten possible for the amperage you are using. Match the tungsten electrode size with the collet size.
